For a real challenge, you might try programming a game instead of playing one. With a little thought and an afternoon or three of work, the popular game Minesweeper can be implemented entirely in Bash.

You can try writing the game yourself first, then refer to Abhishek Tamrakar's article for an overview of how he accomplished it. Sometimes programming doesn't have a purpose but to educate. Programming a game in Bash may not be the project you'll stake your online reputation on, but the process can be fun and enlightening.

And facing a problem you never expected to face is a great way to learn new tricks. Regardless of how you approach learning it, Bash is a powerful interface because it gives you the ability to direct your computer to do what you want without going through the "middleman" interface of a GUI application.

Sometimes a GUI is very helpful, but other times you want to graduate from something you know all too well and move to something you can do quickly or through automation. Because Bash is text-based, it's easy to script, making it a great starting point for automated jobs. Great piece, Seth. I'd seen the Minesweeper implementation recently, maybe on Hacker News, and I'd played the CLH game before, but Bashcrawl is new to me and I can't wait to go try it out!

I have just landed a part time Associate Lecturer gig and will be teaching an introduction to Linux module in the new year, not sure my students would rather play games than study but I know that I would. Sorry, the first line of this article put me off reading any further. I do like work, and the harder it is the better. No doubt there is a large number of other people out there who also enjoy it. If you enjoy it, it's not work. The first sentence of this article is really just a way to suggest that the reader can identify with a common trope that learning is hard work but in fact does not believe it. Hope that clarifies the intent enough for you to chip away at by "chip away" I don't literally mean for you to deconstruct the article, but to treat the words in the article as something you can process, similar to how a scuptor chips away at a block of unformed material in order to create something meaningful [not that unformed material is entirely without meaning] the article!
