The option we have just tried is a startup repair, one of the options on the article you mention. The other option which we have also tried is a system restore. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your situation: If a single operating system is installed, press and hold the F8 key as the computer starts. You must press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, turn off the computer and then restart it.
If more than one operating system is installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8. Any of the safe mode options will work. The lack of a restore point is a worrying aspect of this.
Hi-thanks for help. Just forced a shut down and will resume attempts tomorrow when less tired! Please post if it starts in Safe Mode and then we can go from there. I will not be online until about hrs UK time, but of course someone else may well pick up on the thread. If we can get in using Safe Mode, we can then hopefully get you out of the loop without having to resort to a restore to factory condition.
Hello-turned pc on at 7am and left it on after trying to find a 'safe mode' option, it did not appear, however much to my surprise and almost 2 hours later I finally have a windows screen, and am now desperate to try and get rid of MS's update problems. Heavens knows how it managed to come through the last few days and still finally boot up i have no idea. Advice please on what to do to avoid it again?
Thank you for your patience. The first issue is System Restore. Check that you have Windows set for restore points. It maybe that the report that restore points could not be found was an erroneous report. OR you do not have Vista set for restore points. When you have done that check that you have this update How to avoid this problem To avoid this problem whit Windows Vista, obtain and install update from the Microsoft Download Center separately from all other updates on the Windows Update site.
Install the update that applies to your version of Windows Vista so that you can successfully install future updates. When you run this command, you should see one or more packages listed in a Pending state. There may be a more direct workaround. If Windows starts successfully, check for other issues on the computer - disk issue, memory issues, etc. You may need to perform an in-place reinstall to repair problems with the Windows Installation to prevent similar issues in the future.
